Sony is bringing AI-powered upscaling technology to the standard PlayStation 5 with a new feature called **Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR**. Announced on October 1, QSSR is designed to improve image clarity and stability while allowing games to render internally at lower resolutions. The technology comes from Project Amethyst, Sony and AMD's collaboration focused on improving machine-learning graphics technology for gaming.
QSSR is a streamlined version of the technology behind **PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)**, which has been one of the major graphical features of the PS5 Pro. Sony says PSSR remains its highest-quality solution on PS5 Pro, but QSSR uses a smaller neural network and an implementation optimized specifically for the original PS5 hardware. The result is intended to give standard PS5 owners better image detail and temporal stability without requiring the more powerful PS5 Pro.
Two major PlayStation titles are among the first games to support the technology: **Marvel's Wolverine** from Insomniac Games and **Ghost of Yōtei** from Sucker Punch Productions. Both games received QSSR as an additional graphics option. Insomniac says the technology helps improve pixel-level clarity and stability in detailed environments, while Sucker Punch says it can better resolve fine details in characters and scenery.
The introduction of QSSR could become an important upgrade for the PS5 as the console continues to mature. Sony says the technology will be made broadly available to PlayStation developers, opening the door for more games to support AI-assisted upscaling in the future. If adoption grows, QSSR could allow developers to target smoother performance while maintaining sharper visuals, bringing some of the image-quality advantages associated with PS5 Pro to millions of standard PS5 owners.
